Ethiopian Calendar

The Ethiopian calendar is a solar calendar with 13 months—12 months of 30 days and one short month called Puagme, which has 5 or 6 days. It is about 7 to 8 years behind the Gregorian calendar and starts its new year in Meskerem, which usually falls on September 11 or 12. This calendar is still widely used in Ethiopia for religious, cultural, and civil purposes.

Rooted in the ancient Coptic calendar, the Ethiopian calendar follows a similar structure to the Julian calendar introduced by Julius Caesar. It was adapted to fit local traditions and the Ethiopian Orthodox Church’s unique timeline. Over centuries, it became a symbol of Ethiopia’s cultural independence, especially as the country remained uncolonized and preserved its own timekeeping system.
